born asthe youngest daughter of   Therese Martin and MarieFrançoise on 2 January 1873. She is popularly known as "TheLittle Flower of Jesus". She was the dearest child of her parents.Imbibing the spirit of her devout parents, Therese took a resolution to lead alife pleasing to God, in spite of all the sufferings and distress whichenveloped her after the death of her mother. Therese felt an early call toreligious life, and overcoming various obstacles, in 1888 at the earlyage of 15, she became a nun and joined two of her elder sisters in the  Lisieux, Normandy. After nine years as a Carmelite religious, having fulfilledall her duties with an extra ordinarylove of God, she died at the age of 24, following a slow and painful fightagainst tuberculosison 30 September 1897. .  Therese has been a highly influential modelof sanctity for all those who aspire to lead a holy life because of the"simplicity and sensibleness of her approach to the saintly life".Her spirituality is well known as “The littleway” - precisely by beingsimple, direct, yet calling for amazing fortitude and commitment. In living outher life of faith, she sensed that everything that she was able to accomplishcame from a generous love of God in her life. Herlittle way seems to put holiness of life within the reach of ordinary people.She counsels us, “Live out your days with confidence in God’s love for you.Recognize that each day is a gift in which your life can make a difference bythe way you choose to live it. Choose life, not the darkness of pettiness andgreed.” God was at the centre of her existence as Love. St. Therese invites us to develop a unique relationship withGod: a loving, open and meaningful one. Saint Francis of Assisi,she is one of the most popular saints in thehistory of the church. Pope Pius X called her "the greatest saint of modern times".
