St. Joan of Arc, popularly known as ‘Maid of Orleans’ is considered as the heroine of France. She was born in Domremy, a region in France around the year 1412. At the early age of 13, she began to receive visions of saints who instructed her to support Prince Charles VIth in order to recover her native land France from the clutches of English domination. At that time, after years of humiliating defeats, both military and civil leadership were demoralized and discredited. Placing her absolute trust in the supreme divine power, she convinced the crown-prince to re-organize the army to fight for the country. She exclaimed, “God’s companionship will not fail me, nor his counsel, nor his love”. By her sincere and spirit-filled words, she boosted the confidence of the soldiers who vowed to protect their mother land. St. Joan fought like a valiant worrier and led her people to an astonishing victory over their enemy. While her country men were celebrating their regained freedom, she was captured by the enemies and was prosecuted with false accusations during which she declared, “I am the drum on which God is beating out His message”. After the proceedings, she was burnt alive in the year 1431. She was called as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1920. People of France hold her in the highest regard, as the symbol of French unity and nationalism. The heroic life of St. Joan of Arc counsels us to have a true love towards our mother land, a deeper sense of dedication towards our responsibilities and above all, sincere faith in God who is our creator and caring father.
