Saint Francis is called the “little poor man of Assisi”. He was born in the year 1182 in the town of Assisi in Italy. His father was a very wealthy merchant of Assisi. Francis was a cheerful and charitable boy and was brought up in luxury and gaiety. The plight of poor beggars and lepers melted his heart and out of sympathy, he helped them generously. Francis prayed to the Lord for light and guidance for his life ahead. Inspired by a vision of Lord Jesus, he made a strong determination to renounce his old way of living and to dedicate his life to the service of humanity. He believed that nature itself was the mirror of God. He called all creatures his “brothers” and “sisters”, and even preached to the birds and animals. Many young men followed him and he founded the Order of Franciscans. He died on 3rd October 1226.
Pope Gregory IX canonized Francis on 16 July 1228. The following is the ‘Prayer of peace’ by St. Francis of Assisi:-
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.Where there is hatred, let me bring love.Where there is offense, let me bring pardon.Where there is discord, let me bring union.Where there is error, let me bring truth.Where there is doubt, let me bring faith.Where there is despair, let me bring hope.Where there is darkness, let me bring your light.Where there is sadness, let me bring joy.O Master, let me not seek as muchto be consoled as to console,to be understood as to understand,to be loved as to love, for it is in giving that one receives,it is in self-forgetting that one finds,it is in pardoning that one is pardoned,it is in dying that one is raised to eternal life.
